He is Hand of the King to his grandson Joffrey. He is intelligent, calculating and ruthless and is the richest man in the Seven Kingdoms.
Tywin married his cousin Joanna Lannister who gave him three children. Cersei and Jaime are the firstborn twins. They share an incestuous relationship. During a visit to Winterfell, they were discovered by Bran Stark. Jaime tries to assassinate Bran by pushing him off a high tower. Bran recovers, but never speaks of what he has seen.
Tywin supported Robert's rebellion against the Mad King and King Robert cemented the alliance by marrying Cersei.
After Robert's death, Cersei installs her eldest son, Joffrey as King and she becomes Queen Regent. Joffrey does not know that Jaime is actually his father.
Joffrey is a petulant sociopath who rules as a madman, hurting and destroying everything in his path.
Myrcella is Joffrey's younger sister. She is shipped off to Dorne to wed Trystane Martell in the context of a political alliance.
Myrcella Baratheon's marriage will solidify the Lannister's bonds with House Martell.
Tommen Baratheon is Cersei and Jaime's youngest son.
Jaime Lannister is a Kight of the Kingsguard which means that he cannot inherit from his father although he is the eldest son. He is sent by his father to besiege Riverrun where the Tully's have sided with Robb Stark.
Jaime is taken prisoner by the Starks and kept for nearly a year. He is released by Catelyn Stark who returns him to King's Landing under the supervision of her personal female guard, Brienne of Tarth, in exchange for a promise to release her two daughters, Sansa and Arya, who she believes are being held hostage in King's Landing. Along the way, they are attacked by men from House Bolton (a minor House in the North) who cuts off Jaime's sword hand.
Although Brienne remains faithful to Catelyn, she develops a friendly relationship with Jaime as they encounter many difficulties along the way and help each other.
As Jaime leaves the Bolton camp for the King's Landing he encounters Qyburn who tends to his wound.
Qyburn was thrown out of the Order of Maesters for practicing experiments on live victims. Jaime surmises that he wants to return to King's Landing in the hope of being reinstated.
At the end of season three, Jaime returns to King's Landing with Brienne and Qyburn. Cersei is startled by his missing hand.
Tyrion is the youngest of Tywin's children. He uses his wit and intellect to overcome the challenges he faces as a dwarf. His mother died giving birth to him and his sister and father blame him for her death.
Tyrion has a fondness for prostitutes and drink, but he is a kind man who would protect the innocent claiming that he likes broken things. He is falsely accused of the attempted assassination of Bran Stark and is imprisoned at Winterfell, but is released after a trial by combat. He joins his father in battle, but is sent back to King's Landing to act as Hand of the King in the hope he will rein in his nephew. Tyrion manages to hold the city together under very difficult circumstances. He defends the city against Stannis Baratheon during the Battle of Blackwater and makes an alliance with House Martell (rulers of Dorne) through a marriage alliance between Myrcella Baratheon and Trystan Martell. Tyrion is appointed Master of Coins after Petyr Baelish's departure.
At the end of season 3, Tywin announces that Cersei will be wed to Loras Tyrell (Renly Baratheon's lover and brother of Joffrey's intended, Margaery) and that Tyrion will be wed to Sansa Stark, who will inherit Winterfell when Robb Stark dies, thereby giving the Lannisters a stronghold in the North.
Bronn is a skilled and dangerous sellsword (mercenary) who is employed by Tyrion as his bodyguard. He is rewarded with a knighthood for his role in the Battle of the Blackwater and takes the name Ser Bronn of the Blackwater although he holds no lands or castle.
House Clegane is a vassal house of House Lannister.
Gregor Clegane is the Head of House Clegane is the elder brother of Sandor Clegane who he despises.
When Sandor and Gregor were children, Gregor held his brother's face in a fire for using his toys without permission. horrifically scarring him.
