Page 14: House Stark

Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark and his wife Catelyn (nee Tully) rules over the North at Winterfell. Lord Stark is executed for treason in season one and his son Robb Stark is declared King in the North by his bannermen. He fights to secede from the Seven Kingdoms in what becomes the War of the Five Kings.

House Stark's sigil is a direwolf. Direwolves are an unusually large and intelligent species of wolf that are thought to be mythical, but are real. At one point, Ned finds a dead female direwolf that is survived by a littler of six pups. He is persuaded to keep them on condition that his children take care of them with no help from the servants.

Many people of the North still worship the Old Gods of the Forest, the old religion of Westeros supplanted by the Faith of the Seven.

Eddard (Ned) Stark is Head of House Stark and Lord Paramount of the North. He is named Hand of the King by King Robert and killed by King Joffrey.

Catelyn Stark (nee Tully), wife of Ned Stark is killed at the Red Wedding.

Robb Stark is Ned and Catelyn's oldest son. After his father's death he is proclaimed King of the North by his bannermen and launches and joins the War of the Five Kings to secede from the Seven Kingdoms. He is killed at the Red Wedding. Greywind is his direwolf. He is used by Robb as a ferocious war dog. He is also killed at the Red Wedding.

Sansa Stark, eldest daughter, is promised to Joffrey while Robert is still alive. When she is rejected by Joffrey, she becomes the wife of Joffrey's uncle Tyrion. She has adopted direwolf, Lady, who is killed under the orders of Robert Baratheon.

Arya Stark, runs away after her father is killed. She joins a group of Night's Watch to get back to Winterfell and has a number of misadventures until she meets up with Sandor Clegane who used to be Joffrey's bodyguard. He takes her to the wedding her mother and brother are attending (the Red Wedding). She witnesses the murders and leaves again with Sandor. Ayra's direwolf is Nymeria who attacked Joffrey to protect Arya. Fearing for Nymeria's life, Arya set her loose in the Riverlands

Sandor Clegane was Joffrey's bodyguard, but is now traveling and protecting Arya.

Brandon (Bran) Stark leaves Winterfell with his brother Rickon and 2 others when Theon Greyjoy takes over the castle. He is now a fugitive beyond the Wall. Bran is a Warg who is able to enter the minds of animals. He also possesses greensight, which gives him prophetic visions in his dreams. He is unable to walk given an injury from an accident. Summer is Bran's direwolf and has accompanied him since they left Winterfell. Bran is able to see through the wolf's eyes while he sleeps.

Youngest son, Rickon Stark was traveling with his brother Bran, but is sent with Osha to Last Hearth to be protected by the House of Umber. Rickon adopted Shaggydog who has been with him ever since.

Osha is a wildling spearwife who escaped to the Seven Kingdoms for fear of the Walking Whites. She accompanies Bran and Rickon.

Hodor is a simple-minded servant who carries Bran around. He leaves Winterfell with Bran, Osha and Rickon.

Bran, Rickon, Osha and Hodor are joined along the way by Meera and Jojen Reed who are the children of Howland Reed of Greywater Watch. Their father is a loyal vassal of House Stark. They have come to protect Bran and his brother Rickon.

Jojen shares Bran's ability to greensight. He is the one who tells Bran he must go beyond the Wall.  He tells Osha to accompany Rickon to Last Hearth for his protection.

Ned has a bastard son by a serving girl, Jon Snow. Jon's presence at Winterfell is a source of friction between Ned and his wife Catelyn. Jon joins the Night's Watch where he takes part in the Great Ranging.

As a member of the Watch, Jon goes undercover to spy on the wildlings (people beyond the wall) and falls in love with a young spearwife (warrior woman). He nearly dies, but manages to return to Castle Black (home of the Night's Watch) by the end of season 3. Jon adopts direwolf, Ghost. He's an albino with red eyes. He follows Jon on the Great Ranging, but leaves his side rather than re-entering Caster's Keep. He is currently thought to be in the Haunted Forest.

Theon Greyjoy, heir of Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands has been a hostage of the Starks since his childhood when he was taken by Ned Stark after his father's failed uprising against King Robert Baratheon.

Theon becomes a close friend of Robb Stark and is sent by him as an emissary to ask Lord Greyjoy to work together in gaining their independence. However, Theon turns on him and joins his father Lord Balon in his campaign to capture the North. He takes Winterfell and installs himself as Prince of Winterfell until he is betrayed by his own crew and delivered to House Bolton.

House Bolton of the Dreadfort is infamous for flaying its enemies alive, a practice outlawed by the Starks. For centuries, House Bolton resisted the Starks who wanted to unify the North. They were eventually defeated and bent the knee to House Stark.

Lord Roose Bolton of Dreadfort betrays Robb Stark and kills him at the Red Wedding. He is then appointed as Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North temporarily until Tyrion and Sansa's have children who can take over.

Ramsay Snow, better known as the Bastard of Bolton, is Lord Bolton's only living child who takes Winterfell back from Theon Grayjoy and flays all his men alive. He captures Theon and tortures him to the point of cutting off his penis and sending it to Balon Greyjoy.
